There is a lot of data out there these days on the fuel economy of different boat and motor combinations. In my opinion to get an indication of what the true fuel economy of a motor actually is a decent amount of time needs to be spent on the water.
Recently I did a trip to Lucinda in Nth Qld with my family in my custom 550 Sea Jay centre console powered by a Yamaha 130XA HP Four Stroke Outboard. We spent 10 days in total on the water for the time we were away. Some days we would run 50kms out to the reef and others were spent fishing the Hinchinbrook Channel. Each day we would have 4 people on board and obviously the weather conditions, tides, wave heights etc varied.
The fantastic Yamaha 6YC Command Link 5” Gauge provides useful information on the performance of the motor not only while it is happening but for the overall trip. In total, we did 759 kilometres and used 407 litres of fuel which averages out at 1.86 kilometres per litre. Considering that the 759 kilometres consisted of cruising, sounding around and trolling I think it is fantastic economy from the Yamaha 130HP Four Stroke.
